The Raid: Redemption (Gareth Evans, 2011)
I saw this spectacularyesterday with my friends. After getting some appreciation from international audience, (of course) I had some high expectation about this one. For the FIRST time of my life, I went to Cinema for INDONESIAN film. Actually, it’s worth enough.
I am a big fans of action film with full of violence, such as’s and . This is almost brutally sadistic. I enjoyed it. I give A minus for its action. It is a from Indonesia.
Why is there minus? I think we all agree that the power of this film is the fight choreography. Good job for Yayan Ruhian and Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy (2003). Those guys look well trained. I think they can do that. And it would be more stupendous. That would make this become best action film in years.. They could be the next (Kill Bill) and (The Bourne Ultimatum, Hanna). All fight scene is my favorite. Kind of unpredictable. It’s supported by great sound and score by Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal. The score made my adrenalin release continually. But to be honest, I expected some long sequences of fighting (without cutting it) at least for 3 minutes, just like
One more thing about action part, it will look more interesting if there are some women who take apart there (who can fight too exactly).
Unfortunately, if the action part and sound look promising, the other doesn’t. The basic story is lame. It’s just me or not, I don’t know, I always wonder: Does every police (junior position) always obey and do every order without asking more information first about it? I think they know with whom they will face. Just 20 cops?? Oh come on, to save some demonstration activity, it needs at least 30-50 cops. They said it’s not mission of humanity, didn’t they?
About the performance. Most people said that Iko Uwais is the star of this film. I don’t think so. Doni Alamsyah is. Iko is an expert of Pencak Silat, but he needs to practice in acting more and more. It really disturbed me about any dialogue what he said. Some pronunciations and accent made my ear uncomfortable. Of course, the international audiences don’t realize it, but for Indonesian, It looks funny, even silly.
Doni Alamsyah made this film looks better. He just knows what to do.
Overall, if you’re looking for some action film, just watch this one. Going to cinema will be better. I’ll guarantee you’ll enjoy all sequence of fighting with great sound mixing and score. If not now, when will you see some good action film again from Indonesia?
